Backflow Prevention
BACKFLOW PREVENTION AND CROSS CONNECTION CONTROLUnder certain conditions water from private plumbing can flow into the public water distribution system. This is referred to as backflow. In order to prevent potential backflow, some water customers are required to install and maintain backflow prevention devices.
Preventing potentially contaminated water from being siphoned back into the Bargersville Water Utility distribution system is essential for the protection of public health and welfare. Indiana Administrative Code 327 IAC 8-10 and the Town of Bargersville Code Ordinance 52.07 regulate backflow and cross connections within the Bargersville Water Utility distribution system.
It is the customer’s responsibility to ensure a required backflow protection device is installed. To verify that you have installed and are maintaining appropriate backflow and cross connection control measures, please read the Indiana Department of Environmental Management’s 2016 Cross Connection Control and Backflow Prevention Manual and the Town’s Backflow Prevention Brochure.
TESTING AND SUBMISSION OF TEST RESULTSThe Indiana Department of Environmental Management requires the annual testing of backflow devices by a state certified tester.
Click here for a list of state certified testers.
The Bargersville Water Utility has partnered with Aqua Backflow, a leading technology-based backflow management firm, to implement a backflow program to protect the public water system from backflow contamination. The Bargersville Water Utility requires that backflow device test results are submitted electronically by a state certified tester through the Aqua Backflow web portal or mobile app at www.trackmybackflow.com.
All backflow testers must be certified by the Indiana Department of Environmental Management and registered with Aqua Backflow prior to submitting testing results.
Customers and testers may contact Aqua Backflow with any questions specific to testing, submission of testing results, and other backflow related questions.
Aqua Backflow can be reached by phone at (847) 742-2296, 7:00 am to 5:00 pm CDT weekdays, or by email at [email protected].
IRRIGATION SYSTEMS
Due to the bacterial and chemical contaminates found on lawns, both commercial and residential irrigation systems are considered high hazards with the potential to backflow into the public water system. For this reason, these systems must have an approved backflow prevention device installed and tested annually. It is the owners, and in some instances the tenants, to ensure that cross connections hazards do not exist and the backflow prevention device is maintained.
Property owners may choose to discontinue using a lawn irrigation system for a variety of reasons, however, backflow prevention requirements are still in effect and enforced unless the system is physically disconnected. If the property owner wishes to disconnect a system, the Bargersville Water Utility recommends first reading the disconnection information flyer.
COMMERCIAL CONNECTIONS
Due to the bacterial and chemical continents that may be caused by certain commercial practices, some commercial water connections are considered high hazards with the potential to backflow into the public water system. For this reason, some systems must have an approved backflow prevention device installed and tested annually. It is the owners, and in some instances the tenants, to ensure that cross connections hazards do not exist and the backflow prevention device is maintained.
